The Former President's Progressive Warning Misses The Continent's True Threat: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a flawed assessment of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" agendas pose an existential threat to the continent's identity. Yet, this perspective is based on a fundamental misinterpretation of the reality. The true challenge facing the EU is not cultural but technological and economic backwardness.

A Glaring Economic Divide Between Europe and the US

The data reveal a stark contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, compared to a paltry thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. During this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Today, roughly 50% of the global 50 largest technology firms are American, while only four are from Europe.

The Technological Deficit: A Critical Problem

This widening economic gap stems from superior efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of global tech dominance is decidedly American. In the last five decades, hundreds of American startups have grown into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap raises a pressing issue: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is Europe positioned? Most analysts agree it is largely a contest between two involving the US and China, with Europe entering at a significant handicap.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of major reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. Europe still lacks a genuine capital markets union, a factor that limits the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can introduce a service under one set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population, is split among 27 different national regimes, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was once met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, one can find reasons for optimism. European leaders are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have begun to advance substantial change. Notable analyses on European competitiveness and the single market point to the necessity of sweeping changes.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable much higher degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe still possesses considerable strengths: high-quality workforce, excellent education systems, and world-class labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations could unleash a surge of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in developing next-generation technologies, it can still significantly increase productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a critical moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, if it fails to take bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
